About / Our Work

Grounded in Indigenous knowledge. Guided by community priorities.

Who We Are

Tsawalk Community Society is an Indigenous-governed organization based in an urban environment, supporting Indigenous people living away from their home communities — including those living, working, or studying in urban areas.

Our work is grounded in recognition of the traditional, unceded territories of the local First Nations on which we operate.

Our Mandate

Tsawalk’s mandate is to strengthen and revitalize Indigenous cultural heritage while advancing economic development, skills training, and Indigenous food security through community-led programming, cultural learning opportunities, and collaboration with Elders and knowledge holders.

Through exhibitions, mentorship, arts-based initiatives, and hands-on learning opportunities, Tsawalk provides accessible pathways for Indigenous people to reconnect with cultural identity, build skills, and participate in meaningful economic and community-based opportunities.

How We Work

We work alongside communities, partners, and organizations to support initiatives that are:

Rather than creating solutions, we focus on supporting what already exists — helping to organize, strengthen, and bring ideas to life.

Governance

Tsawalk Community Society is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors who provide leadership, oversight, and guidance for the organization’s work.

Our Board is made up entirely of First Nations members, ensuring that our work remains grounded in Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, and community priorities.

Land Acknowledgement

Tsawalk Community Society acknowledges that our work takes place on the traditional, unceded territories of the Snuneymuxw, Stz’uminus, and Snaw-naw-as First Nations.

We are grateful to live, learn, and work on these lands, and we recognize the enduring presence, knowledge, and stewardship of the Indigenous peoples of this region.

Partnership

Tsawalk works in partnership with NISA, an Indigenous-owned organization supporting project development, coordination, and implementation across Vancouver Island.
